The award will be presented at the APTA TRANSform Conference in October 2019 in New York.

“Wharton is an influential business public transit leader who has also demonstrated his leadership through participating in and leading numerous APTA committees,” said APTA President/CEO Paul P. Skoutelas. Additionally, he represented the industry when he testified before Congress on public transit infrastructure investments and was honored in 2013 at a White House ceremony as a Champion of Change.”

Currently, Wharton develops design-build partnerships throughout the U.S. for SYSTRA, as well as serves on several APTA committees. Previously, he served as president of a manufacturer of specialty transit equipment for the international transit electrification industry. Prior to that, he held executive management roles for a nationwide construction firm that specializes in mass transit and energy.

Wharton began his career at a national construction firm where he later held executive management roles. Honored by the White House as a Champion of Change for Transportation Technology Solutions for the 21st Century in 2013, Wharton received the award from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. In 2010, Wharton testified before the US House of Representatives, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, regarding the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and delivered a progress report on transit infrastructure investments.
