NJ TRANSIT raising bus, rail fares by 9%

NJ TRANSIT officials have said the increases, which were proposed in April, are needed to close a $60 million budget gap that remained even after the agency recently cut $40 million. The increases are the first since 2010 when fares increased an average of 22%.

These findings are part of the Chaddick Institute’s Technology in Travel study, which includes more than 35,000 unique passenger observations since 2009. Passengers are counted once on a given trip. Each year, passengers are observed by trained data collectors to determine how they spend their time while traveling.

There is a new way to get around the Queen City. The City of Charlotte and Charlotte Area Transit System introduces you to the CityLYNX Gold Line. The Gold Line streetcar runs from Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center up to the Charlotte Transportation Center through the heart of center city connecting you to CATS bus service, the LYNX Blue Line and small business districts. Missouri Gov. signs bill funding Kansas City transit

The bill, approved with bipartisan support in the Missouri General Assembly, provides about $35 million in annual funding for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority. The legislation also permanently locks the tax in place, meaning it will no longer be subject to legislative renewal.

The new fare gates will employ near field communication technology, allowing riders to tap their credit cards, government IDs, or smartphones and have the fare immediately deducted from their accounts. While the pilot program appeared to work effectively for the few who used it, Metro conceded testing across media was insufficient.

On July 13, 2015, Metro celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Metro Rail system with a re-creation of the opening of the Metro Blue Line in 1990. During the event, a Metro Blue train appeared from the 7th St./Metro Center Station tunnel through a veil of smoke to break through a banner as it did in the 1990 event.
