Rail workers involved in accidents face PTSD, depression

The National Center for Intermodal Transportation surveyed 363 commuter railroad operating employees for a 2011 report and found that 43.6% of them had been involved in at least one critical incident — accidents, near misses, collisions, personal injuries or contact with people or equipment on the tracks. Of those employees, 12.1% reported symptoms consistent with PTSD after the incidents.

MTA engineers worked for more than one year to develop this technology by creating compatibility between state-of-the-art software and three separate operator logon systems currently utilized in MTA buses.

One glitch is that the signs won't provide real-time information on train arrivals until an overhaul of PATCO's 120-car fleet is completed around 2017. The upgrade of the trains will provide the equipment necessary for the trains to communicate with the signs.
