For disabled students, UW campus accessibility falls short

Posted on May 11, 2015

MADISON, Wis. — Karen Brown, a disabled 63-year-old returning student who suffers from lupus, said she must suffer through all types of weather to get to campus via public transportation because she cannot afford the high price of accessible parking spaces on campus, The Badger Herald reported.

For Brown, these disabled parking spots, at $650, are nearly a month’s income, a price that makes the use of a personal car unfeasible, she said, according to the report.

Despite budget cuts, campus officials said the university will continue to make accessibility a priority as they continue to improve and renovate the campus, including the testing of a new Accessible Circulator Shuttle, which caters to those with disabilities by having a set route that will deviate upon request, The Badger Herald reported.
