MBTA outsource plan could save $65 million

Posted on February 13, 2017

BOSTON — A new plan to outsource maintenance on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) bus fleet could save the agency up to $40 million a year, but could affect hundreds of workers, reported the Boston Herald.

The recommendations, part of an internal report produced consultants hired by the agency, also target the agency’s in-station customer service operations as an outsourcing “opportunity,” as well as additional maintenance of its new Red Line and Orange Line vehicles, the report said.

The plan, which altogether could save $65 million a year, would mark the agency’s boldest foray into the private market since lawmakers gave it a three-year reprieve from the so-called Pacheco Law, according to the Boston Herald. For the full story, click here.
