SAN FRANCISCO — The USA Today reports that John Krafcik, CEO of Google's pioneering self-driving car unit Waymo, said his tech could "handle" a scenario that left an Arizona woman dead after she stepped into the street and was hit by an Uber car driving in autonomous mode.

At the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting in Las Vegas, Krafcik said that in the case of pedestrians or pedestrians with a bicycle, “we have a lot of confidence that our technology would be robust and would be able to handle situations like that one."

Krafcik did not comment on the status of Waymo's self-driving car passenger pick-up program that has been going on for more than a year in the Phoenix area, which suggests the business will not pause its self-driving car testing like Toyota and nuTonomy did following Uber’s accident on March 18.
