WMATA pulls 3000-Series trains after door malfunction

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Post reports that the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) put nearly 300 of its 3000-series railcars out of service until the agency can determine what caused a set of doors on an Orange Line train to open on its own.

The incident, which happened after the train left the station on Sunday afternoon, was captured on video by a rider. WMATA officials said they learned of the video Monday and pulled the trains from service overnight Monday, and on Tuesday morning, the transit agency announced that it had pulled all 284 cars from the series out of service, which is roughly 23% of the agency’s 1,200-car fleet.

In addition to WMATA officials, the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission, which is responsible for safety oversight of the transit agency, has launched its own investigation into the incident. For the full story, click here.
