Rendering of a FLIRT for DART.

Stadler intends to assemble and build eight FLIRT trains with anticipated passenger service by the end of 2022 after securing a $119 million contract with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). The multimillion-dollar agreement is under The Cotton Belt Regional Rail Project and includes the construction of an Equipment Maintenance Facility (EMF).

The new vehicles will have the ability to transport up to 240 seated and 225 standing passengers, while also being fully ADA-compliant. Other features included are a comprehensive CCTV system, an automatic passenger-counting system, with added ability to detect huddling of passengers in certain areas of the train and blockages of boarding areas, making the trains fully equipped with advanced and wide-ranging safety features for passengers and operators.

It is self-propelled by a diesel multiple unit (DMU) and meets both tier 4 EPA emissions standards and FRA Standards. With four powered axles and eight unpowered axles, the train maxes out at approximately 267 feet in length.

This is the fourth contract for Stadler in Texas and they will provide input and lessons learned to Urban Engineers, who is contracted for their design services for the planned EMF.
