At a March 2 Annual Scholarship and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Metropolitan Phoenix Chapter, Phoenix-based Valley Metro’s CEO Stephen R. Banta was recognized for his contribution to advancing female and minority leadership at the agency.

Banta focused on diversity within his top management after becoming Valley Metro’s CEO in March 2012 by making an intentional commitment to increase diverse leadership at the agency.

“Steve has clearly focused on developing a diverse workforce that provides opportunities for women to advance and lead,” said WTS Metropolitan Chapter President Alicia Robertson. “He didn’t hesitate with supporting the WTS Transportation YOU program by providing a mentor and her mentee the opportunity to attend the 2012 DC Summit. That was a priceless experience for both women.”

In 2012, he combined the existing staff from two different transit organizations, Valley Metro and METRO light rail, into a single agency where a multi-cultural environment is welcomed. Banta exhibited workplace diversity in selecting female and minority leadership for his executive team including his chief of staff; director of communication and marketing; director of administration and organizational development; and chief of safety and security.

The event, held at the Tempe Center for the Arts, is an annual event recognizing local individuals and organizations that make strides in local transportation advancement.
