LONDON — Reuters reported that London Underground drivers began the first in a series of strikes that caused long lines at bus stops, packed buses, and thousands of commuters taking to the roads on bikes and on foot on Wednesday.  

The workers plan to stay off the job for two days this week and another two next week.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport workers and the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association unions called the strike to protest against job losses and plans to close manned ticket offices as part of the modernization of the 151-year-old network. For the full story, click here.
