Italy's trade unions staged their first full-day strike Tuesday, protesting government labor reforms, bringing rail and air transport to a halt. It is estimated that 13 million people heeded Tuesday's strike, Italy's first full-day work stoppage in 20 years. Only unsuspecting foreigners turned up at deserted railway stations, which were expected to return to normal later in the day as staggered eight-hour stoppages drew to an end. The strike was aimed at Prime Minister Berlusconi's planned labor reform.
