The Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. signed a $1 billion five-year contract with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to provide commuter rail services. The Commuter Railroad Co. is a joint venture among Connex, Bombardier and Boston's Alternate Concepts Inc. The award followed a highly competitive bid process that began last spring. The company's overall strategy to improve Boston's commuter rail services is to focus on day-to-day quality, operational efficiency and employee training. For nearly 17 years, such service was provided to the MBTA by Amtrak.
