The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has installed surveillance cameras linked by fiber optics at transit stations to speed up the agency’s response to an emergency, city officials said.

The 11 cameras installed this week are the first of 1,200 that will be installed in and around stations by the end of 2006, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Fiber-optic lines link the cameras to the CTA's central control center, and within two months, they will be connected directly to the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

The CTA this summer began a $31 million fiber-optic upgrade at all CTA rail stations.
