The 68-year old streetcar was acquired as part of a trade with United Transportation Corporation (UTC)/Rail Air Sources (RAS) in exchange for two Siemens U-2 light rail vehicles that were phased out of the MTS fleet.
The year-long pilot is proposed as an experiment under FHWA’s “Special Experimental Project No. 14” and FTA experimental authorities, provisions made possible by Congress to allow the agencies leeway in finding new and more effective means of building, maintaining and managing federal transportation projects.
Set for vote as soon as August, the proposed plan includes up to 117 miles of new, high-capacity transit, such as light rail, bus rapid transit or streetcars. About $2.4 billion would help maintain major city streets while adding new bicycle lanes and street lights.
The new production facility will serve the Brazilian market and, in a near future, the Latin America region where a number of new tramway projects are emerging. When fully operational, the facility will employ around 150 people.
The first phase of the effort calls upon local law enforcement agencies to show a greater presence at grade crossings, issue citations to drivers that violate rules of the road at crossings and consider rapid implementation of best practices for grade crossing safety.
One option included offering one week of free fares throughout the system ($6 million in lost revenue).
The death of train engineer Glenn Steele, 62, marks the first fatality in the Feb. 24 crash in which a Metrolink train struck a truck stopped on the Ventura County Line tracks and derailed, injuring 28.
With this latest accomplishment, Metrolink remains on track to become the nation’s first passenger rail system to have a fully implemented, interoperable PTC system in place.
The funds will be used to replace and raise the signal and communications systems on the Morris & Essex lines and along a portion of the North Jersey Coast line, as well as repair damage to electric power and distribution systems used by Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, with other long-term recovery projects also are funded.
Some members said they want to shift the emphasis of the search to focus on a fresh batch of candidates whose skills are more suited to fixing problems that have come to light in the transit system in recent months.
C. Mikel Oglesby brings almost a quarter of a century of experience in the transit industry to his position, most recently operating Oglesby Consulting LLC, a firm he established to provide transportation expertise to the public and private sectors.
The new initiative aims to rethink how VTA delivers bus, rail, roadway and other transportation services, said Santa Clara VTA GM Nuria Fernandez. As a catalyst for ingenuity, the center intends to pair itself with academics, startups, tech firms and nonprofits from the region. The center also will operate the VTA’s open data portal.
Frank DePaola, who was named to replace outgoing MBTA chief Beverly Scott, has already created a team to examine what went wrong this winter.
