Named Outstanding Public Transportation System for 2017, the TTC last won the award in 1986.
The Rail Safety & Security Excellent Awards recognizes exceptional safety and security programs for rail systems in North America.
When Joel Volinski accepted a job as the interim director of Florida’s Broward County Transit Agency in 1983, he had never ridden on a public transit bus. “Here I was, the person who knew less about the subject than anyone, and suddenly I was directing the biggest agency in county government,” he tells me, leaning back in his leather chair. “So you have to have a sense of humor, and you have to be kind of a quick study.”
The savings are based on the cost of commuting by public transportation compared to the cost of owning and driving a vehicle.
The event, held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis Sept. 19 to 21, featured an expanded show floor and educational sessions touching on everything from electric buses to how to implement a succession plan.
The new APTA chair is Doran J. Barnes, executive director, Foothill Transit, West Covina, Calif. Barnes, who is the executive director for the system succeeds Valarie J. McCall.

Michael Schneider was named Outstanding Public Transportation Business Member for 2016.
