CTA’s existing bus fleet is housed at seven bus garages across the service region and serviced at a heavy maintenance facility on Chicago’s Far South Side — all of which will need to be substantially upgraded and retrofitted with charging infrastructure required to operate electric buses.
The new bypass is the first new, permanent mainline track to be added to CTA since the Orange Line opened in 1993.
Since January 2021, CTA’s system-wide ridership has essentially doubled, with more than 21 million monthly and nearly 800,000 average weekday rides provided during the month of September.
Even with COVID-19 restrictions in place and a massive drop in tourism numbers, the RTC provided 56 million essential transit trips on its fixed-route bus system, 1.1. million trips on its paratransit service, and nearly 75,000 rides on its senior and veteran services.
