The new bus — wrapped with a mural of California poppies — is part of a two-year demonstration project to complement OCTA’s existing fleet.
The energy will be used to help power the vehicles and run the climate control systems, lights, ramps and wheelchair lift while the buses are stopped, eliminating the need for idling.
Based on the SunLine American Fuel-Cell bus configuration, it utilizes an ElDorado National heavy‐duty urban transit bus glider with a Ballard FCvelocity HD6 fuel-cell power module and BAE Systems’ HybriDrive propulsion system.
The funds, shared by Calstart in Pasadena, Calif.; the Center for Transportation and the Environment in Atlanta; and the Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium in Boston, will go to 11 research and demonstration projects.
The grant's focus combines company's existing lightweight chassis and robust, mature hybrid-drive train system with an advanced Ballard fuel cell, further chassis mass improvement research and next generation component development.
