The Purple Line extension will garner about 49,300 daily weekday boardings at the seven new stations.
The funding represents a significant commitment toward pending multi-year Full Funding Agreements for the projects.
In addition to the allocation announcement, FTA is also advancing the project into the Engineering phase.
The line will connect riders along the route to major job centers, including downtown Minneapolis.
The 4.1-mile streetcar line connecting riders to major activity centers and other transportation services in downtown Santa Ana.
The grant represents the first installment of CIG Program funding for the GLX after the FTA signed a FFGA with MBTA for the 4.7-mile light rail line from Cambridge to Medford.
The project is expected to cost approximately $299.3 million, with other funding coming from state cap-and-trade funding, other federal and local funding.
The project is ready to start construction, and the final step is approval of the federal grant.
