All of COTA’s current New Flyer and GILLIG buses will be retrofitted with Lumin-Air’s system, as well as the entire fleet of COTA Mainstream Paratransit vehicles.
Capital Transit was the first agency in Alaska to purchase an electric bus in spring 2021. The seven GILLIG buses will add to their fleet of 18 buses, which are predominantly diesel buses manufactured by GILLIG.
The comprehensive testing assesses key performance areas, such as maintainability, reliability, safety, structural integrity, noise, fuel economy, and emissions.
Pace anticipates that passengers will begin riding on electric vehicles in 2023, once Pace has had time to test the technology and implement safety policies and procedures.
The awards were made possible through the FTA's annual Buses and Bus Facilities and Low- and No-Emission Vehicle programs.
Beginning August 22, elementary and high school students will also be able to ride Pace, Metra, and CTA for free.
The eGen Flex is the next generation of Allison’s proven H 40 EP electric hybrid propulsion system, which has been operating in select IndyGo buses since 2004.
The buses are expected to begin service in 2023.
