This passenger train, much different than RTD’s current light rail vehicle, will be used on the East Rail Line to Denver International Airport (DIA), the Gold Line to Arvada-Wheat Ridge and a segment of the Northwest Rail Line to Westminster. These new 36 miles of FasTracks lines are under contract and early construction activity is underway.
Ten cars will be put into service immediately across the Metrolink System. As more cars are assembled, tested and approved for service, they will be used to augment Metrolink's current fleet.
The action, when added to the initial purchase of the new cars, amounts to 137 of the nation's safest railcars being deployed on Metrolink's system, starting with the first 10 next month.
The three railcars included in this initial rollout are the first of 120 new Silverliner V rail cars the agency is purchasing under a $274 million contract with Hyundai-Rotem USA, which has opened a new facility in South Philadelphia to do fabrication and assembly work.
Two Crash Energy Management railcars, assembled by Hyundai-Rotem Co., were rolled out at Metrolink's new maintenance yard. The agency plans to deploy a total of 117 cars later this year.
Contract valued at about $30 million to supply electric, sliding plug doors for 440 subway cars to the Marmaray project, which will connect the European and Asian sections of Istanbul upon completion in 2012.
