Debuted a prototype of the ameriTRAM, a 100 percent low-floor streetcar in Charlotte on Thursday. Uses e-Brid, a propulsion technology that enables operation powered by overhead catenary or on-board lithium-ion batteries. The technology is purported to save millions of dollars in operational costs.
The 100 percent low-floor, dual-powered LFX-300 will be unveiled in Charlotte, N.C. in January, 2011. The vehicle will also debut in other U.S. cities in the coming months.
The LFX-300 is a hybrid vehicle propelled by either overhead electric catenary or on-board battery power. In battery-powered mode, it uses electricity stored from regenerative braking and by charging the batteries while running on catenary, minimizing total power consumption.
On-board computers will provide automatic next stop announcements and communicate vehicle location and event messages to the central computer-aided dispatch/automatic vehicle location system.
