Since they spend nearly 20 percent of their collective budgets on administrative functions, and the national average for such spending is closer to 15 percent, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission says Bay Area agencies could merge their admin operations to cut costs.
While Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed budget, released last week, does not include cuts to transit, a spokesman for a San Francisco transportation and planning agency cautioned that a fuel tax swap approved last year may take $2.5 billion from transit.
Agency officials claim that the number of fare evaders is still too small to justify making the necessary changes to the smart card. BART and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission are monitoring the problem and will make changes if abuse increases.
Report says that changes to funding, operating costs and cooperation between agencies must be made to save money.
Fare gates and TVMs will eliminate cash transactions at the fare gates and help customers access the subway more quickly. Also included in the project are new station agent fare gate control terminals, test equipment, and improved financial and ridership reporting tools.
The first project going to bid, which has been allocated $16 million in ARRA funding, will directly improve vehicle availability, service reliability and performance by rehabilitating approximately 40 standard and 20 articulated Muni buses.
