TriMet signed a contract with local software company GlobeSherpa to pilot the system for its buses, MAX light rail and WES Commuter Rail. DART's system will be developed by Unwire, a Danish company with extensive experience in mobile ticketing for transit agencies, for $1.5 million.
Now, riders will be able to use American Express contactless payment cards, as well as cards from other major payment networks, to make secure transit payments at PATCO.
Rail passengers can simply touch their compatible phone to the strap cover and get immediate access to the content being delivered by the Near Field Communication system.
Nextaccount will pave the way for mobile payment and ticketing solutions in transit, giving travelers the ability to pay transit fares directly at the point of travel with NFC-equipped mobile phones.
While the technology is still evolving, transit systems are hoping to outsource collection activities, reduce risk, and refocus time and effort on meeting their core goal: transporting people.
