As the project sponsor, Santa Clara VTA is applying for $1.5 billion in FTA New Starts Program funding, completing the Phase II funding plan.
The chosen corridor includes eight rail stations and is estimated to take 88 minutes of travel time from the first to last station along the corridor.
This ROD is a part of the environmental review process required by law for projects seeking federal funding through the CIG Program. Additional steps must be completed according to legal criteria before the FTA can make a determination about CIG funding for the project.
NEC FUTURE is FRA’s comprehensive planning effort to identify ways to improve the reliability, capacity, connectivity, performance, and resiliency of passenger rail service throughout the Northeast Corridor through 2040 and beyond.
With the ROD in hand, Sound Transit can continue the process to compete for the federal funding that is necessary to help pay for the project.
Initial service will extend from downtown Fort Worth, across northeast Tarrant County and Grapevine and into DFW Airport at Terminal B. The 27-mile regional rail corridor is projected to have more than 10,000 daily riders at initial start of service in 2018 using eight stations.
This step makes the first major expansion of the Baltimore region’s transit network since the early 1990’s eligible for future federal approvals and funding.
The decisions will make the corridor eligible for new trains, improved frequencies, help improve on-time performance and ultimately reduce travel time to less than four hours.
The action is an important prerequisite for Metro to begin final design of the nearly two-mile underground light rail line in Downtown L.A. and for the agency to seek federal funding to help build it.
