The changes are in line with the principles of a new safety framework being developed by the FTA, known as the Safety Management System. In November 2014, the FTA chose the CTA as the first transit agency in the nation to assist in the development of SMS.
The purpose of the examination is to help CTA assess the strengths and weaknesses of the safety of operations and identify areas where the agency can further reduce risks and make other safety improvements.
