Sun Van is now one of the first paratransit agencies in the U.S. to provide a mobile app which tracks trips in real-time.
Just like more recent models of Sun Vans, the new Glaval models still carry up to 14 riders, with room for as many as three wheelchair passengers.
Purchased with funding from the Federal Transportation Administration and the City of Tucson, Sun Van received 35 cutaway vehicles built by Glaval at a cost of $90,000 per vehicle.
Born in Seattle into a fairly large family, Kate Riley had hopes of moving to Arizona to become a nurse. Instead, her father persuaded her to take management courses at a local college.
The decision was preceded by an hour of heart-wrenching testimony from parents of disabled children, advocates from local nonprofits and low-income senior citizens dependent on the paratransit service.
The two-year contract, which goes into effect May 17, 2012, also includes operation of the Downtown Loop circulator service, development of a seamless regional fare system, and management of the Special Services Office that sells fare products and evaluates applicants for the city’s Economy Fare Program.
