VIA Rail Canada to streamline service, lay off 200

Adjusting frequencies on some routes to better reflect customer demand, while maintaining service on all current routes. The agency will focus resources on improving service and attracting more customers to routes where demand is strong and growing. The agency’s unionized workforce is expected to be reduced by about 9%.

VIA Rail awards upgrade contracts to IRSI

The $98.9 million fleet overhaul will fully renew all 98 of VIA's Canadian-built cars and reduce their energy requirements by up to 20 percent. The $5.8 million Renaissance rolling stock project will upgrade 21 cars to offer new levels of accessibility for travelers with special requirements.

VIA Rail’s departures, arrivals now online

VIA anticipates offering this same service for its trains in Atlantic and Western Canada as a future enhancement and is also in the process of developing a mobile version of this service, which will be accessible by smartphones.

Canadian Government, VIA complete rail upgrades

Upgrades so far on VIA’s network include a $12.5 million investment in the Alexandria Subdivision, between Ottawa and Montreal as well as similar improvements currently underway on the Smiths Falls Subdivision between Toronto and Ottawa.
