The first RTS bus was put into service in 1979 as a demo and eventually served routes in every borough.
The city issued a recommendation of award for 60-foot, articulated, five-door clean diesel buses to New Flyer under a 2016 solicitation.
The contract includes 10 firm orders, with options to purchase an additional 18 buses, and establishes a new partnership.
Altogether, NJ TRANSIT has purchased over 2,000 coaches over three decades from MCI.
Each bus is equipped numerous safety features including security cameras, an audible safe turn alert system, and curbside and street-side turn aid lights, as well as a factory-installed driver’s barrier to increase bus operator safety.
The New Flyer Xcelsior buses have been designed for a special BRT system that improves route capacity and schedule reliability.
