The state-funded program, which expanded by one month this year, provided access to all RTD’s services during the months of July and August at no cost.
The initiative, a recommendation resulting from the agency’s most recent fare study and equity analysis, was approved last month by the RTD Board of Directors.
The pilot will not include free transfers to other buses or subway lines.
The board will continue to study the financial impacts of extending the program beyond June 2024.
“Free Transit: It All Depends on How” presents a variety of ideas that show promise in empowering policymakers to combine free transit with other policies to overcome pressing problems in the transportation industry.
Upon receipt of the American Rescue Plan Act funds, the fare-free initiative should extend another year to December 31, 2024.
