The incident happened at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Coliseum Station in Oakland aboard a Dublin/Pleasanton-bound train.
The effort comes on the heels of a bus driver being punched in the face last week, which brings the number of reported assaults in the Vancouver region alone this year to 42. Meanwhile, Vancouver’s transit system launched a new "Don’t Touch Our Operators" campaign.
Transit can play a role in helping to stop human trafficking, considering the number of people using it 24 hours a day. SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel was recently joined by representatives from local social service agencies and a former human trafficking victim to discuss signs of the crime, law enforcement efforts and how the public can help.
California Assembly Bill 716, which took effect last year, allows BART to issue a “prohibition order” against anyone who commits certain offenses on the transit district’s property, such as violence against employees or passengers, defacing property or urinating in public.
