Washington, D.C. tops the list of gridlock-plagued cities, with 82 hours of delay per commuter, followed by Los Angeles (80 hours), San Francisco (78 hours), New York (74 hours) and San Jose, Calif. (67 hours).
Overall, traffic congestion in the U.S. dropped 30% in 2011, according to an annual report, which cites high unemployment and high fuel prices as contributing factors.
Key findings include a continued rise in congestion and commuter costs, and that public transportation saved travelers 785 million hours of delay, 640 million more gallons of fuel and $19 billion in congestion costs. APTA and T4 America leaders respond.
Combining predictive analytics with real-time information about current travel congestion from sensors and other data, the system could recommend better ways to get to a destination, such as how to get to a nearby mass transit hub, whether the train is predicted to be on time, and whether parking is predicted to be available at the train station.
