WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. House of Representatives voted for a three-month extension of federal funding for road, bridge and mass transit projects, according to a Bloomberg report. The measure must pass the Senate before March 31 to avoid the lapse of federal highway programs. Both chambers are scheduled to wrap up legislative business this week before taking a spring recess.

Following the House of Representatives' passage of a 90-day stop gap extension to the current surface transportation authorization, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, issued the following statement:

"If what the House did today becomes law, it means a 90-day stop gap extension of our transportation programs. It also means the continuation of thousands of job losses that have already begun due to the uncertainty created by the House approach. I call on House Members to cancel their vacations and come back to have a vote on the bipartisan Senate bill, MAP-21. I am working with my colleagues to attach the Senate bill to the 90-day stop gap extension and send it back to the House. If we can do that today, we can save the House from itself. If we can't, I will continue to push back to save jobs and stop the Highway Trust Fund from going bankrupt."

Transportation for America Director James Corless issued the following statement in response to the House passage of a 90-day extension of the current federal transportation program and motor fuels tax:

“While we are disappointed that Congress was unable to pass a transportation bill before the end of the current extension, the action taken today in the U.S. House will at least prevent a disruption of the federal transportation program and ensure millions of Americans continue to work by building and repairing our roads, bridges, and transit systems.

We now urge House leaders to reach across the aisle to create a bipartisan measure that can find the broad support typical of past transportation bills, as well as the Senate’s current bill.”
