Calif.'s SMART seeks $6.6M for train cars

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) officials are seeking $6.6 million in federal funds to buy more train cars. SMART wants the county transportation authority to endorse its request before addressing others so that it can meet a year-end deadline for buying the new cars at the current price, reported The Press Democrat.

The request is under fire by bicycle advocates because the rail agency would be taking the majority of the $9.9 million that Sonoma County is getting for such projects as bike lanes, sidewalk improvements, traffic lights and more. To read the full story, click here.
