SHANGHAI — The world's largest subway system, the Shanghai Metro, introduced QR codes so customers can pay for fares with their mobile phones, reported the South China Morning Post.

QR code readers are being installed at all the 389 metro stations and passengers can pay their tickets via local payment platforms, Alipay, or China UnionPay, by scanning the code after downloading a special mobile app offered by the metro. QR code payment systems have already been launched in cities such as Beijing and Hangzhou, the report said.

On average, as many as 10 million people, more than Hong Kong’s population, take the Shanghai subway, according to the South China Morning Post. For the full story, click here.
