New research to help alleviate bus bunching — when buses on a particular route clump, which leads to crowding for the lead bus, slower speeds and wasted capacity for the following buses — was put to the test on Georgia Tech's 3.3-mile campus loop system. The new method of bus coordination abandons the concept of tightly-managed headways or schedules, drivers instead follow the flow of traffic, and natural headways emerge over time, according to The Atlantic Cities report.
