FCvelocity-HD7 will be the next-generation of Ballard’s fuel-cell power module, designed specifically for integration into bus applications.
The grant's focus combines company's existing lightweight chassis and robust, mature hybrid-drive train system with an advanced Ballard fuel cell, further chassis mass improvement research and next generation component development.
One 40-foot hybrid fuel-cell New Flyer bus will enter regular transit service in 2010, and an El Dorado fuel-cell hybrid bus will be operational in 2011 at the Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based agency.
Fuel cell buses are zero-emission vehicles, with no greenhouse gases, particulates, or harmful emissions released during operation. Water is the only byproduct. BC Transit's fleet of fuel cell buses is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 1,800 tons per year in British Columbia.
