With the nation in the grips of an economic downturn and Congress inching slowly toward resolution on other important bills, it’s beginning to look as if SAFETEA-LU will continue to be extended until Congress and the Obama administration can clear their slate and focus on finding a way to fund the bill.
Includes $10.231 billion in new budget authority for public transportation — a $740 million increase, or 7.8 percent, over last year’s level, but $106 million less than the level authorized in SAFETEA-LU.
Plan calls for an annual 20 percent increase in federal transit funding, with the program being funded at a guaranteed level of more than $30 billion annually by 2015.
