MTA staff photographer Patrick Cashin has captured the progression of the Second Avenue Subway project since 2009 through images posted to Flickr.
Valued at approximately $208.3 million, the contract was awarded to the 86th Street Constructors Joint Venture, a joint venture of Schiavone Construction Co. LLC and John P. Picone Inc.
MTA officials said the area at the northwest corner of 72nd Street and Second Avenue was not equipped to handle the force of the blast, which sent debris flying into the street.
With joint-venture partner LK Comstock and Co., a subsidiary of RailWorks, the company will construct the track and systems for Phase I of the Second Avenue Subway.
Transit officials have also promised a garble-free PA system — with speakers arranged to minimize reverberation — and raise the possibility of piped-in music.
