The San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency (SFMTA), overseer of the Municipal Railway (Muni), opened the new Muni Metro East Light rail Maintenance and Operations Facility (MME).
Located near San Francisco’s eastern waterfront and flanking the T Third Line, the new 13-acre storage, maintenance and operations facility is an important component of the SFMTA’s Third Street Light Rail Project, which was conceived to enhance connections between some of the city’s most traveled destinations, while improving Muni’s infrastructure, enhancing its support capabilities and ensuring system sustainability for future generations. MME will also be the operating base for the Central Subway when it opens in 2016.
The addition of MME effectively doubles Muni light rail capacity and provides light rail operations and maintenance on both sides of San Francisco. As MME becomes integrated into Muni light rail operations, the increase in operational and maintenance capacity will be felt by customers who will experience fewer delays and less crowding, according to the SFMTA.
