Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell has come up with a $110 million plan that would increase various automotive fees paid by state motorists to raise funds for public transit.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Republican legislators dislike the plan and may try to let it die before the state legislature adjourns in a few days.
Rendell’s proposal calls for new and higher taxes and fees on car rentals, emissions testing, tire purchases and copies of motorists' driving records that would raise a combined $110 million a year.
About $90 million of the funds would go to the state’s two largest transit agencies — $60 million to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority and $30 million to the Port Authority of Allegheny County.
The rest of the new money would go to smaller rural bus systems around the state.
