Distracting cell phone conversations on transit inspire study

ITHACA, N.Y. — A doctoral student in psychology at Cornell University conducted a study based on her experiences riding public transit as an undergraduate at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Lauren Emberson and her co-authors determined that hearing half of a conversation makes our brains work harder to make sense of what we're hearing — an equally aggravating and captivating problem, according to the report in Scientific American.
