DETROIT — Newly elected head of the Detroit Department of Transportation Dan Dirks spoke to a group of city officials and leaders of the drivers and mechanics union Thursday outlining his plans to improve the bus system.

Plans include getting city buses running on time, a problem that has plagued the transit system for years, and improving safety on the buses, as assaults on bus drivers have become a contentious issue for both drivers and riders, who say they do not feel safe, The Detroit News reported.
