The plan, which will be presented for approval to the board of directors of the MBTA, also includes $61 million in one-time revenues that must be approved by the state Legislature to help close the agency’s $159 million deficit.
The event, held from Feb. 26 to March 3, saved 213,139 miles from being traveled and more than four tons of pollution from being emitted into the air. Twenty-nine employers competed in the Try 1 in 5 Rideshare Week Employer Challenge as a way to rally the highest percentage of participation among organizations.
The savings are based on the cost of commuting by public transportation compared to the cost of owning and driving a vehicle, which includes the March 26, 2012 average national gas price ($3.897 per gallon- reported by AAA) and the national unreserved monthly parking rate.
The integrated surveillance system includes multiple cameras covering the interiors of standard 40-foot buses and 60-foot articulated buses. The depots are equipped with equipment capable of not only capturing the video images but also performing diagnostic health checks on the system.
With some traveling as far as 60 or more miles a day to so-called “commuter schools,” the problem is exacerbated by escalating tuitions and shrinking campus living options.
