His strategy will address speeds, areas where buses back up and how to better connect with new job centers. The plan is needed to accommodate the population growth that is expected in San Francisco over the next 20 to 30 years, with city officials estimating an extra 100,000 households.

UTA may disband transit police

Also considering ending customer service duties so the squad can focus on serious enforcement that only they can perform. The agency’s GM said that one advantage to having the police force is conducting fare enforcement, because it reduces confrontations, making riders feel safer.

OCTA names new deputy CEO

Ken Phipps has worked at the agency for 19 years, serving as the executive director of Finance and Administration since 2009. He will help lead OCTA on local, state and national issues related to transportation programs and policies, and assist the CEO in coordinating business, operations and management activities among the agency’s divisions.

Houston launches trip planning app

Features include locations of bus routes and rail lines close to riders’ locations, information on scheduled and real time bus and rail arrivals, and suggestions for convenient trip routes based on arrival time, transfers and/or walking distance.

U. of N.M. looks into safety changes after bus crash

A campus shuttle ran over a student who was crossing the street against a “Don’t Walk” sign. The bus driver claimed to not to have seen the student. A campus spokesperson said that the university should focus on adding crosswalks and signage along streets with heavy foot traffic.

Central Ohio transit removing campus stops

Will remove 71 bus stops, including three close to Ohio State University. The move is part of the agency’s Bus Stop Service Improvement Project. The project evaluated COTA bus stops and the spacing between them to improve efficiency.
