In total, the region’s transit agencies added 45 million rides in 2023 compared to the previous year, representing an increase equal to the annual transit ridership of Dallas, the Chicago RTA said in a press release.
Systemwide in 2023, the CTA provided nearly 36 million more rides compared to 2022. In 2023, bus ridership increased 15.5% over 2022. Rail ridership increased 13.4%.
The significant step toward sustainable transit comes after the bus underwent rigorous testing last year.
The new website, called “Your 2023 Metro” report, gives riders detailed information about their use of public transit last year including bus and rail ridership, number of stations visited, and more.
The unions, with whom the company has had strong working relationships since 1976 and 1968, respectively, voted with a resounding 94% endorsement for the new five-year contract.
The acquisition will add heavy-duty transit buses to Phoenix's existing product line of medium-duty shuttle and school buses.
In a letter, APTA President/CEO said “At a minimum, we urge the THUD Appropriations Act, together with advance appropriations of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, to provide $21.1 billion for public transit and $16.7 billion for passenger rail, as passed by the Senate..."
To sweeten the deal even more, the board also recently approved pay increases for these essential positions, effective Jan. 1, 2024.
