The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) began seeking proposals earlier this month to sell naming rights on hundreds of buses, trains, subway stations and bus shelters, reported Newsday.

Bridges, tunnels and MTA buildings could also become potential billboards as part of the agency’s attempt to fill a $1 billion budget hole, officials said.

The MTA has promised that it will not raise bridge tolls and transit fares in an attempt to cover the deficit.

MTA officials said the naming rights project is an extension of the agency's existing ad campaign on trains and buses, which generated $78 million last year.
