Despite posting positive third-quarter earnings, Bombardier Inc. announced that it plans to lay off workers in its transportation division.

Not satisfied with the division’s performance compared with market expectations, the company will idle 2,200 workers, or 21% of the workforce, by April 2006, according to a prepared statement.

In March, Bombardier cut more than 6,000 positions and closed seven production facilities.
