Virginia House Speaker William Howell this week proposed boosting state transportation spending by almost $1 billion over the next year and a half.

According to the Washington Post, he also said the state should commit to investing hundreds of millions more to transit through the end of the decade.

In December, Virginia Gov. Mark Warner proposed using $824 million for road-building, transit improvements and matching funds for public-private ventures.
