Public transit agencies across the U.S. are honoring the late Rosa Parks this week with National Transit Tribute to Rosa Parks Day.

Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, the 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Ala., marks the inaugural tribute day.

While each transit agency will be honoring Rosa Parks in its own way, most have chosen to reserve a front bus seat in her honor.

After Parks’ act of civil disobedience and subsequent arrest, she has been referred to as the mother of the modern Civil Rights Movement.
