The New York State Department of Transportation allotted $20 million to fund the purchase of hybrid-electric or CNG-fueled buses for transit agencies in the state other than those based in New York City.

The money is available as part of the $2.9 billion Rebuild and Renew New York Transportation Bond Act approved by voters last November.

The initial $20 million will be offered until the end of the state's 2006-2007 budget year on April 1, 2007.

Additional funding will be made available with $10 million more per year from 2007 through 2009.
